Becoming a restaurant owner is both exciting and daunting, especially if you are new to the industry. One wrong move can derail all your preparations. Restaurant hygiene is a priority for all successful restaurants. A clean restaurant, with good pest control practices can keep out common restaurant pests.
If you have just become a restaurant owner, ensure that you plan and prepare to keep out the following common insect pests.
1. Cockroaches
Restaurants have everything that cockroaches need to survive. This is why cockroaches, especially the German variety, are one of the worst restaurant pests. If German cockroaches breed in your restaurant, removing them will be a difficult job.
Since your restaurant will already have everything German cockroaches need to thrive, such as water, food and nesting sites, prevention is your best defense. Ensure you keep your restaurant kitchen and bar dry and clean after every shift to deprive cockroaches of what they need.
2. Ants
Ants usually come into restaurants from the outside and transport food back to their nest. But if your restaurant's structure is ageing and in need of repair, there may be plenty of room for ants to nest indoors too. To keep ants out of your restaurant, ensure that your building lacks entry points. The best way to do this is to repair exterior damage like cracks quickly.
Ants can sense sugary or salty foods too, so keep your restaurant as clean as possible.
3. Flies
Flies can become a costly nuisance if you allow them to breed in your restaurant. Keep flies from accessing your restaurant by placing insect screens on windows, doors and vents. And be sure to keep your drains clean at all times, as drain flies may become a big problem if your drains are dirty.
4. Weevils
Weevils primarily infest rice, flour and corn. They can access your restaurant through infested food products or through cracks and crevices in your restaurant's walls. The last thing you need is for customers to find weevils and weevil larvae in their meals.
Prevent weevil infestations by checking that all dry food products are properly sealed when they arrive. And keep all dry foods firmly sealed to stop invading weevils from infesting dry food stores.
As a new restaurant owner, one of your first priorities will be pest control. If you have yet to hire a company to oversee all your pest control practices, find a pest control company near you. A good pest control service will prevent insect pests from harming your restaurant's chances of success.
It is always better to prevent a problem before it occurs, rather than having to solve it later. This is especially true when it comes to pest control. When I called in a local pest control company to deal with an infestation of termites, I asked them to give me all of their best advice about how to prevent pest problems. The contractors gave me lots of useful info about the steps I can take to deter a range of different pests from setting up home in my property. I hope you find the articles I have published here useful.
