If you have termites present on your business premises, then the outcome can be quite devastating. Every year, termites do a great deal of damage to business properties all over the country. Telltale signs that they are present include disturbed patches of earth and wood that sounds hollow when you tap on it. Left unchecked, termites can even destroy entire buildings, so you should consult a commercial pest control company if you think they are around. In the meantime, what can you do to protect your usual business operations from a potential infestation?
Spray a Termiticide Around
Most commercial pest control professionals will recommend using a specially formulated termiticide to kill as many of these insects as possible when they cross over onto your property. Many such insecticides come in a liquid form which you dilute and then spray. The best method is to dig a trench around the outside of your premises and spray the pesticide into it. You can then cover the trench, and any termite that ventures past it will soon die. Using a termiticide that is designed for these insects will mean that you can also preserve other forms of wildlife more effectively than a general-purpose pesticide would allow for.
Maintain Woodwork
Termites like to bore their way into woodwork. So-called drywood termites will eat their way through rafters, joists and even floorboards if they get the chance. The best way of protecting any such timbers around your business premises is to varnish them. If you don't want to varnish them, you can simply paint them in order to make them harder for termites to work their way into. However, if you notice that your woodwork already has flaking paint that is ageing prematurely, then it may be because termites are already present. If so, you will need a commercial pest control company to help you get rid of them.
Remove Habitat
The sort of termites that live underground tend to make their nests under rotting wood. Consequently, the best thing you can do to discourage them from colonising you business premises is to get rid of any fallen-down trees or old root balls. This proactive approach will mean it is less likely you will end up having to call on the services of a pest control expert. Another good tip is to remove sources of water where possible because termite colonies need them to be able to thrive.
It is always better to prevent a problem before it occurs, rather than having to solve it later. This is especially true when it comes to pest control. When I called in a local pest control company to deal with an infestation of termites, I asked them to give me all of their best advice about how to prevent pest problems. The contractors gave me lots of useful info about the steps I can take to deter a range of different pests from setting up home in my property. I hope you find the articles I have published here useful.
